Biography

Philip Rentería was born in Laredo, TX, in 1947. Rentería was a Professor at the Glassell School of Art in Houston, TX, and his work is primarily considered to be abstract in form and meditative in nature. During his time at the Glassell School of Art, Rentería taught and mentored a number of national and international artists, many of whom would go on to have successful careers. He exhibited throughout Texas, with one of his last exhibitions of his “Heaven Human Earth Series” taking place at the Moody Gallery in 1991. In the late 1970’s, his “Mind Grid Paintings” became some of the first of Rentería’s paintings to be collected by the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, also making him one of the first contemporary, local, Latino painters to have their works collected by the MFAH. Rentería died in Houston, TX in 1999. Later that year, an exhibit entitled, “Intrinsic Radiance: The Paintings of Philip Renteria,” showing over a dozen of Rentería’s sketches along with a triptych of paintings that mediated on light, was hosted in his honor at the MFAH.
