Preliminary Biographical Note

Professor Laura Oren received her first degree from Queens College, The City University of New York in 1966 as a Magna Cum Laude graduate. She holds a Ph.D. in British History from Yale University and graduated first in her class from the University of Houston Law Center in 1980. After graduation, she worked in private practice, specializing in civil rights law and appellate work.

As a University of Houston Law Center faculty, she teaches Family Law and Constitutional Law and most of her work has often been about the intersection of these two fields. Additionally, she teaches Women and the Law, Conflict of Laws, and State and Local Government Law. Her specialty areas of research are in Civil Rights and Family Law.

In addition to her work as a lawyer and a professor of law, Oren has been very active in the women’s rights movement. She was involved with the National Organization for Women, the National Women’s Conference in Houston, and the Houston Area Feminist Federal Credit Union
