GRETA (Gulf Region Educational Television Affiliates), 1958-1994

 Series

On February 23, 1965, forty school administrators met to discuss the Gulf Region Educational Television Affiliates known as "GRETA." GRETA was an organization designed to offer educational television to various school districts. A board of school administrators governed the organization. Through the cooperation of school administrators, teachers, and Channel 8 personnel, programs were developed into the school curriculum. In his book, Public Television America's First Station, William Hawes noted, "GRETA materials were primarily considered supplementary to classroom instruction, although in some cases they were dominant." By 1977, GRETA broadcast in-school programming to sixty area school districts.
