Harris County FCD, 1955-2000
Newsprint offers a particular challenge to archival projects. Its highly acidic pulp content leads to yellowing and deterioration of the clippings and any contiguous papers. It is standard practice to photocopy clippings and discard the originals. This is an expensive practice and was employed only partially in this collection. Removing clippings to separate files is more cost effective but destroys the continuity of clippings as they relate to campaigns and organization actions. Where possible, the archivist sleeved clippings that were relevant to campaigns and issues so they could be retained in context. Large bodies of news clippings, found loose or located outside a sequence of events, were removed and filed separately and organized alphabetically by campaign, issue, or person. The News Clippings series represents this collection of newspaper items separated from other sections of the archives and is contained in 32 folders filed in 3 boxes.
