CEC Antecedents
Supplemental accessions provided by Terry Hershey and Sarah and Army Emmott follow as closely as possible the organizational patterns employed in the CEC office records. Terry Hershey's collected CEC papers provide the best record of the emerging CWC and CEC organizations. Hershey's contribution includes the early financial story of the two organizations as they subsisted on an eclectic mix of community support. The founders learned through experience and example how to organize, raise money, and tap into other kinds of community energy. They raised bits of money, sometimes from their own household budgets, to pay a month's phone bill here or a receptionist's salary there. They also received grants from the Moody Foundation and others. Hershey's early financial records reveal the struggles to keep the two organizations alive as well as the help they offered other struggling groups. During the 1970s, Hershey hosted a series of luncheons that provided discussion of position papers presented by area experts. Those position papers are preserved in her Programs series. While CEC's office records contain documentation of CEC's office correspondence, Hershey's accession includes several years of important board member correspondence including her own. Overall, Hershey's accession provides the CEC archival records collection with invaluable documentation of its early history, board activities, and pressing environmental issues housed in 17 boxes holding 175 folders.
