This series contains 124 folders with information pertaining to the history, foundation, and organization of the Houston Area Women’s Center. It also includes correspondence, volunteer and intern records, and other administrative materials related to the functioning of the organization. The series contains additional sub-sets: the Task Force records, which highlight the evolving needs of the organization, the Guild records, an ancillary support organization, and The Council for Abused Women records, a volunteer group who ran the shelter for the first six months. These files document the development of the shelter, the hotline, and the expansion of programs from the years 1977-2000.
