From the Series:

Community education has been at the forefront of the Houston Area Women’s Center mission from its inception. This series contains 197 folders dating from 1981-2000. It documents the development of the different programs by target population, and then by specific program. Community Outreach efforts are described this way, of special note is the Teen Dating Violence Project implemented at local area schools. This program was instituted in 1990 by a group of volunteers from Rice University, and grew into a program that reached thousands of students. The training of volunteers and materials has been kept with each program in as much as possible, since the materials were received at different times and catalogued in different series. The Teaching Peace Curriculum for high school (H.S.) Teachers developed by Michele Ostrander and Alicia Nuzzie in 2000, can also be considered an educational tool; it is found under the Public Relations Series, Publications: Box 35, Folder 34.The There is considerable overlap with the series on Training and Manuals, which can also be considered under the label of Community Education. The Media Training Project is found under the latter category, but it can also be considered an important component of community education. The Community Education Program has been described as “dedicated to a protective approach to ending violence against women through education, information and referral, and advocacy at the local, state and national levels”.
