Christa Landert and New Worlds to Seek, 1969, 1977-2001
In this section of the discussion JHL IV spoke directly about Christa Landert, who is a Swiss academic that conducted a dissertation on JHL I. She also played a major role in the translation of the English version of JHL I’s journal. All of the material in the folder relates to the “last of the English version books” related to JHL I’s diaries, entitled "New Worlds to Seek." The folder also includes a book on Nauvoo, Illinois, which includes an image of the Lienhard family home on page 17.
JHL IV explained how Sutter gave JHL I $8,000 to go to Switzerland and bring Sutter’s family back to America. JHL I’s travels took him by steam boat from California to Panama, where he crossed the isthmus, then took another steam vessel to Philadelphia where he took out American citizenship papers. Thus JHL I returned to Switzerland with dual citizenship, and bought the Conrad Meyer mansion (a famous German writer) in Switzerland. JHL IV’s grandfather, JHL II, was born in that house. And then many of the Lienhard family immigrated back to the U.S. and settled in Nauvoo, Illinois.
