Hector P. Garcia, February 21 1979

 Item — Box: 1, Cassette: 10, Side: A

Hector P. Garcia represents the American G.I. Forum. In this interview, he discusses his organization's support of bilingual education, citing that both Anglo and Mexican American students would benefit from a non-segregated bilingual educational experience. However, Garcia notes that the Texas education system had no intention of educating Mexican-American students, instead encouraging them to drop out in grammar school. Garcia also argues against the notion that people in Texas speak "Tex Mex" rather than Castilian Spanish. He states that people have been deceived into believing that Mexican Americans speak a corrupted language. Additionally, Garcia emphasizes the importance of bilingual education in increasing Mexican American students' self esteem and the value of teaching Mexican American culture.
