Belton, Helene, 2006
Summary: Helene Belton [HB] is a Katrina survivor from New Orleans, Louisiana [NOLA]. Ms. Belton’s describes her black Catholic background in the Seventh Ward of NOLA. She talks about the parochial schools she attended. Her husband has lived in the city almost thirty years. Their story is one of leaving the city just before the Hurricane hit. HB talks about life on the road, difficulties with FEMA, and help from family and strangers. She stayed with her extended family in Grove, then Houston, then Humble, Texas. She and her husband had always planned to leave the city. Her sister and her family remain in Texas. Her parents returned to New Orleans. Helene describes her home and neighborhood in New Orleans East on her three trips back to NOLA. HB finds life pleasant in Humble. She hopes NOLA will take this opportunity to improve itself though she believes restoration is a long ways off. The city will never be the same because of the people it has lost. She is concerned for her parents who returned to live there.
