Belton, David, 2006
Summary: David Belton [DB] is a Katrina survivor from New Orleans, Louisiana [NOLA]. Mr. Belton is originally from Newark, New Jersey but has lived in NOLA almost thirty years. He describes the different mindsets among blacks in Newark and those at Xavier University [XU] when he arrived in NOLA in the 70’s. DB talks about getting used to New Orleans’ customs and mores, especially what he calls, “creolism.” Eventually, with the help of native NOLA friends, he fell in love with the city and its spirit of “true community.” He met his first and his present wife, Helene, at XU. Their story is one of leaving the city just before Hurricane Katrina hit, their return to salvage what they could, and their decision to relocate.
