Magee, Pamela, 2006
Summary: Pamela Magee [PM] is a Katrina survivor from New Orleans, Louisiana [NOLA]. Her interview begins with a laugh, she leads into telling about how she heard about the storm. She then tells about the many conversations she had with different people while becoming aware of the storm. She speaks about the storm and her evacuation routes during and after the storm: including her struggle strides to get to the UNO Lakefront Arena and her efforts to get her family out of NOLA and to the city of Shreveport, Louisiana. She praises the reponse of the people of Shreveport. She saves a child of whom she then got temporary custody. Pamela notes how many people were in her group and how she arrived to Houston. She talks about the mayor of Houston and how the resources were made available. She tells about her experience with receiving the FEMA Vouchers and other resources. She then explains an example of a young boy that died from strep throat and tries to understand why didn’t people check on him. She explains about the situation with the Houston Housing & Furniture relief and other resources. She describes the emotional and nutritional affects of the hurricane upon her. Pamela gives her views on the education system and the neighborhood cause and effects. She talks about the difference between the two mayors from Louisiana and Texas [Ray Nagin of New Orleans and Bill White of Houston]. Pamela talks about how Katrina has changed her life.
