Daigos, Laura, 2006

File — Reading Room Computer: 1, File: SKR-AD-SR06

Summary: Laura Daigos was born in Grand Isle, Louisiana. Her family has lived in [GI] twelve years. LD’s family built the home in which she lived. LD lived in a camp. She has returned to the community by helicopter since the hurricane. Preparing for the storm, a group of five and a half family members and friends departed to Shreveport, Louisiana. LD has lived on both sides of the island. Being a local, LD was very familiar with the community and its residents. LD liked knowing most of the people in her community. LD found out about the storm while hanging clothes on a clothes line outside in the yard from her niece. LD wasn’t aware of the dilemmas that may come with evacuating due to the fact she hasn’t ever evacuated before. Pulling a camper trailer on an SUV they left [GI] and drove north. The group stopped in Houma then continued onto Shreveport. The drive almost took whole days worth of driving before they arrived. Katrina changed LD’s life and way of living. Arriving to Shreveport, LD and family received assistance and shelter. The unanswered questions that ran through LD’s mine about if her home was ok were agony. LD was only informed with news reports. Stressful breakdowns and wondering minds were a downfall until final results came in about the surrounding parishes. Then from Shreveport, LD and family went to Houston. Houston offers advantages that [GI] aren’t able to offer in the next year. LD concludes the interview with concerns about the upcoming hurricane and the realization on rebuilding the home in [GI].
