Stevenson, Robert L., 2007

File — Reading Room Computer: 1, File: SKR-AH-SR01

Summary: Mr. Robert L. Stevenson [RLS] was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. He describes growing up in the Calliope Housing Project and his educational background in the local public schools but he attributes his success to his grandmother who was the backbone of his family and the reason that he stayed on the right path. RLS shares the detailed affects before the arrival of Hurricane Katrina, during HK and the after affects of HK. He shares the intimate details of how HK changed his life because he had never evacuated before while teasing other people who chose to evacuate. He share with me how he is glad that he stayed behind in the apartment, willing and able to assist his neighbors during their distress and he shares the story book drama of how he rescued his neighbor whose ceiling collapsed because of the water pressure. RLS lived on the third floor of the apartment complex and how it was used as a shelter for his neighbors who lived on the 1st and 2nd floor whose apartments were submerged under the water. RLS shares the details of the helicopter rescue and the parting of his neighbors and the somber separation and how the effects of never seeing his neighbors again would have a lasting effect on him. RLS was brought to Houston, Texas where he has been rebuilding his life since HK.
