Mackie, Calvin Jama'l, 2007

File — Reading Room Computer: 1, File: SKR-AH-SR03

Summary: Calvin Jama’l Mackie [CJM], age 20, is a HK survivor from New Orleans East where he attended Nunez Computer College and majored in Computer Science; he was only fourteen hours away from graduation before HK. He also held a management position at the New Orleans Superdome before HK. CJM describes his life before HK as good, fast paced, and full of fun. On the weekend before HK he and a few friends participated in a gospel rap contest at his local church. He admits that he was having fun without being responsible for his actions he stretched his money for pleasure. “ He knows that he had the best of both worlds”. He has gained strength and learned to be financially responsible due to the experiences he witnessed with people whom he knows that were not able to evacuate because they had no ducats [money] to leave the city of NO. He witnessed many things on the trip to Houston such as people getting robbed, running out of gas, and suffering from sickness on the highway. He has secured a job at the Port of Houston this job provided what CJM was looking for: financial security; in case another storm should arise, he will never have to struggle again with finances. He misses people in NO, but he has his priorities in order and is focused on his future.
