Johnson, Alvin L., 2007
SUMMARY: Alvin L. Johnson, also known as Al “Carnival Time” Johnson, age 67, is a native of New Orleans, Louisiana now living in Houston because of Hurricane Katrina. Up until the storm, Mr. Johnson owned a home on Tennessee Street in the Lower Ninth Ward. In the interview, Mr. Johnson shares some of his memories of earlier days in New Orleans. He also talks about how he got his start as a musician and the influence that his neighbor Fats Domino had on his music. Mr. Johnson discusses his long battle in getting his song “Carnival Time” copyrighted. He covers the events that lead him to “riding out” the storm in Mississippi, and his relief that he hadn’t returned to his home in New Orleans. Mr. Johnson wonders what will happen to him now that his house has been bulldozed and FEMA will only cover rent for a few more months. He discusses how “blessed” he has been for things like the many people that have assisted him since Hurricane Katrina. Mr. Johnson plays his famous song “Carnival Time.”
