Leblanc, Lumar, 2007
Summary: Lumar Leblanc, age 39, is a native of New Orleans, Louisiana who was living in the New Orleans East neighborhood up until Hurricane Katrina. Leblanc is now living in Houston with his wife, his nine year old son, and his mother. His oldest son is finishing up his last year of high school in New Orleans, a difficult but understandably important decision that Leblanc made for his son. Lumar Leblanc is the founder and drummer for the Soul Rebels Brass band. Leblanc shares many memories of New Orleans, focusing especially on his recollections of the Lafitte project. Mr. Leblanc revisits his and his family’s exodus from New Orleans, and life in Houston immediately after Hurricane Katrina. Lumar Leblanc describes when he first saw his home and deserted neighborhood in New Orleans East. Frequently Leblanc shares his concerns about the difficult situation that many citizens of New Orleans and the city face. For him, it is the people that make up the heart and soul of New Orleans. Mr. Leblanc talks at great length about music: discussing his early exposure to music, his love for music, and the importance that music was to him and many others growing up in New Orleans. He expounds on the plight of music for the younger generation of New Orleanians, before and after the storm. Leblanc discusses the importance that his band was to him after Hurricane Katrina, and how it supported him on many levels.
