Additional Description

Summary

Linda Nellum [LN], age 35, is a Katrina survivor from East New Orleans, Louisiana. She is happily married with three kids, two girls and a boy. LN describes her life before the hurricane speaking about living all over the New Orleans area, being incarcerated for two years and excelling in her education. LN then describes living through hurricane Katrina, remembering feeling emotionless and striving to help her family survive. In the midst of the storm LN struggle to keep her family together in many ways, one by passing her husband off as her son so they wouldn’t be separated by the Marines who tried to make all women and children get on one bus and men on the other. She talks about finding a dead new born baby in a bathroom in the New Orleans Superdome and witnessing police officials do nothing when a group of men beat a man for trying to rape a little girl. However in the midst of her storm she finds comfort in knowing God led her to safety and to a little Indian statue with a sign saying, “You are here.”
