Additional Description
Summary
Phyllis Naquin [PN], age 43, is a Katrina Survivor from New Orleans, Louisiana. Her interview begins with a description of her job in personal care and her duties before the storm. PN took care of her mother up until the time of her death. Her mother died two weeks before Katrina hit. Phyllis then gives a long description of her decision not to evacuate and the aftermath of waking up to rushing waters in her bedroom. She stayed in her New Orleans home for two days, witnessed conditions (including animals corpses and a human body) that reminded her of Friday the Thirteenth, and eventually walked to the Claiborne / Broad bridge, from which she was flown to the Lakefront Airport, and from there to Armstrong Airport. Phyllis was evacuated by the National Guard to San Antonio, Texas. She describes a near-death experience and recovering from a coma in the hospital; she speaks about her flashbacks and depression, her unhappiness with FEMA, and missing New Orleans: Houston is boring and too big, but she is happy here.
