Elizabeth Thomas [ET], age 62, is a Katrina survivor from New Orleans, Louisiana. Elizabeth was born and raised in New Orleans. She grew up in Uptown New Orleans and was living in New Orleans East when Katrina hit. Elizabeth has a rich family history, unique to New Orleans. Her story highlights the history of debutante balls in New Orleans—in particular, The Original Illinois Club. In addition, she shares stories about the Catholic Religion and traditions unique to the Crescent City. Finally, Elizabeth’s evacuation was a long, two-day drive from New Orleans to Houston. She finds herself on the road to Texas when rain from Katrina begins to fall. Elizabeth has now made her home in Houston and does not plan on returning to New Orleans.
