Hieu Nguyen [HN], age 16, born in New Orleans [NO], Louisiana. HN was one out of nine children in his family. HN described his typical day at Ben Franklin High School, a private school in Louisiana. HN’s best subject in school was math, but he had more fun in his English class. HN compared his experience in the Houston school system to the NO school system and found the Houston school system not challenging enough. HN lived in a small community where everyone knew everyone else and church was within walking distance. The church community was very important to HN and his family. HN and his family had a strong belief in god and they were very close. They do everything together. This was seen throughout HN narrative from describing his typical weekend, his boredom in a dangerous hurricane situation, to his family’s evacuation to Houston. HN’s Katrina experience has brought him closer to his family and made him realize how he should appreciate things that he took for granted until it was taken away.
