Summary
Ayesha Mitchell [AM], age 24, is a Katrina Survivor from New Orleans, Louisiana, [NOLA]. Her interview begins with some descriptions from her early life with living in the Desire Projects [DP], her brother’s suicide, and her mother’s schizophrenia condition. After her description of her early childhood, she then discusses events that led up to the storm including how she ended up staying behind in her two bedroom home with 7 other people. She describes how the water rose to the second floor of their third story building and how the day after the storm they had to be rescued by a helicopter and taken to the University of New Orleans [UNO] as a place of refuge. She then describes the journey that her family endured after being rescued, the people they met along the way, and how they ended up in Houston.
