Additional Description
Summary
Balah Muhammad [BM], age 37, is a Barber/Stylist from New Orleans now living in Houston as a result of Kartrina; he grew up in the earlier years of his life in the Seventh Ward on Marais Street. His family later moved to 1520 Congress Street. This is where he remembers playing with his childhood friends, whom he has maintain a lifetime friendship. His career was in the hair care industry as a Barber/Stylist; a career that he didn’t really want to do because it wasn’t a challenge but, he later realized that this profession has helped him developed into a business owner of BSA. BSA is a Barber/Beauty Shop that had a unique business curriculum; it looks into the beauty, science and art of a person. BSA concept is to develop the inner soul of a person, providing them with an outer service through hair and introducing the science of developing their clients’ spiritual awareness. BM doesn’t know if he’s going to return to New Orleans or re-open his barber/beauty shop at this time. He’s working for a company and has traveled to over sixteen cities since the storm, meeting new people and developing new friendships. Balah has not been affected by the storm because he has a solution oriented mind. He doesn’t accept the negative, but find ways to better himself. He misses the relationships that he developed with the clients in the barber shop for over 15 years, but he still looks at it in a positive way. New Orleans to him is a lot of people who were deaf, blind and dumb people, who have a lot of potential. BM has a desire to show the people a better life, maybe one day he will return to make a difference with the people, but understands that it starts with his family first. BM talks about a book that he wrote along with business partners called, the Art of Life Recycling. This book is based on Spiritual Ecology; how you interact with yourself in the mirror. He’s mastering himself and he’s not judging other people, nor is he trying to understand why people do what they do. BM is concentrating on being a better person and helping other people.
