Additional Description

Summary

Alverlister Hill [AH], age 48, a Security Guard by profession, is a Katrina survivor from the Seventh Ward, New Orleans, Louisiana. [NOLA]. Her interview begins with details of her nice and quiet neighborhood. She then talks about the devastation of her neighborhood and the terrifying conditions she lived through while still in NOLA six days after Hurricane Katrina hit. Still at work while there is a dangerous storm on its way, she comes home where she lies down for a nap and encounters cries for help that are believed to come from her dreams. These cries allows her to save the lives of an elderly and blind woman and her daughter. AH criticizes Mayor Nagin’s evacuation plan, describes returning to NOLA to find her house occupied by others and her property repossessed. She also talks about being emotionally disabled by the hurricane. In Houston, she feels welcomed by some yet misunderstood by others.
