Additional Description
Summary
Joan, now 53 years old, spent her whole life in New Orleans and did not evacuate the city before the hurricane hit. Joan was a school bus driver for the Orleans Parish school district and also drove an airport shuttle. The Sunday that the storm began to approach Joan was staying in a third floor apartment with her daughter’s family that included: her daughter (Leslie), a son-in law (her daughter’s husband), two young children (a boy and a girl) and the son-in-law’s mother. Men on boats came to take them to a bridge where they were left and they had to walk to another area of the bridge to catch a bus that took them to the Central Business District (CBD). From there they were able to get a ride to Baton Rouge. Joan stayed there for a little while before leaving on a journey that led her to sleep in 5 different places before coming to Houston. Her daughter’s family is also in Houston and Joan is struggling to start over again.
