Additional Description
Summary
Terrell Newsome (TN), age 23, is a Katrina survivor from the Press Park neighborhood of New Orleans, Louisiana. After a brief description of his work with Delgado Community College, he describes staying in New Orleans as Katrina approached, weathering the storm in the city, and rescuing neighbors trapped on rooftops; he tells of his time on an I-10 overpass, where police verbally abused a man for lamenting the death of his wife and child. He speaks of the looting for survival in NO, and then describes his drive to Houston and the subsequent search for his family members in the George R. Brown Convention Center. He was awarded Housing Assistance from Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). He also touches on the differences between the law enforcement, and educational systems in Houston and New Orleans.
