Additional Description
Summary
Marcela Arouz [Arauz?] [MA] is an evacuee of hurricane Katrina from New Orleans, LA. She lived in a suburb of New Orleans on the West Bank of the Mississippi River called Algiers. Her interview begins with a description of Algiers, and her life and job there. She describes her decision to evacuate and what she and her children went through during the process. She describes what it felt like to be in Houston watching the hurricane on television. She was certain, immediately after the hurricane hit, that everything was going to be all right. Then the levees were breached and she and her sons realized that they were not going to be going back to New Orleans anytime soon. She also describes her decision to stay in Houston and her job at MD Anderson Cancer Hospital. She describes what it felt like to return to Algiers, and the minimal damage to her home there. She explains her decision to remain in Houston for the foreseeable future and how she feels about the house she has bought here and the neighborhood she now lives in. She also describes the difficulty of evacuating for Rita and the feelings the situation brought up for her. She explains that the relocation has been extremely difficult for one of her twin sons and easier on the other.
