Additional Description

Summary

Melissa Tridico [MT] is a survivor of hurricane Katrina from New Orleans, LA. She lived in a neighborhood known as the Lower Garden District. Her interview begins with a description of her neighborhood, and her life and job there. She also describes her childhood attachment to New Orleans. She then explains why she stayed in New Orleans for Katrina: she was an ICU nurse and was on the hurricane list, a list of hospital staff that would stay and work during a hurricane. She describes what it was like to be in the hospital and caring for her patients when the water was rising. She then details what is was like to be evacuated by Bateau from the hospital. Melissa stayed with family in Baton Rouge after she was evacuated and then decided to look for employment in Houston, she also has family here. She describes how it feels to be in a city that does not have the cultural interest of New Orleans and how much she really misses New Orleans. She describes what it felt like to return to her apartment in the Lower Garden District for the first time and the minimal damage to her home there. She explains how her stay in Houston will likely only be temporary as she wishes to return home.
