Additional Description

Summary

Troy Moody [TM], age 18, is a Katrina survivor from the West Polk neighborhood, Algiers, New Orleans, Louisiana. His interview begins by describing his early years, in the Fisher Project with his family and his community. Troy gives a lengthy description of his experiences during the height of the storm: separation from family members, flooded waters, knocked down buildings, broken windows, people killed. TM describes sleeping in a hotel on Canal Street and witnessing windows breaking, ground rumbling. The family flees Canal Street to West Bank and hears news of water rushing down Canal Street and thinking of how lucky they are to be alive. He then describes the family's path after the storm and how community helped the family get back together, and finally, how the family was helped by friends and rescued from a car accident on the long drive to Houston. He also reflects on his dreams of playing football and offers of scholarships lost in the midst of a storm.
