Additional Description
Summary
Toyya Greene [TG] born January 21, 1983 is a Rita survivor born and raised in Lake Charles, Louisiana [LCL]. She is the youngest child of 2 children born to her parents. TG began her early years in a neighborhood called Franklin Street in a house that was passed down through generations. She describes the community as everybody knew everybody. You could go to your neighbors for just about anything that you could ask for. They did not want for anything. In 1989 TG and her family moved to another neighborhood called Oak Park. This area was known for the very large oak trees and being very shady. She describes this community as good because they helped people. She went to schools and worked in the same area. TG was a single mother raising her children when news of Hurricane Rita came. She had to borrow money and a vehicle to get out of town not knowing where they were going. At the last minute, TG follows her mother who had volunteered to escort some consumer clients to safety. TG recalls a series of events: evacuation, vehicle breakdowns, tire blowouts, traffic gridlock, police escort, car accident and hospitalizations in the height of the storm. She describes in length her shelter experiences and going back home to a different life in LCL: stores closing early, fights, long waits, long lines to get services, angry, aggravated and disgusted people. Life was definitely not the same in LCL and that influenced her decision to move to Houston for a change and a chance for recovery. Hoping to find a better life and the good community that she once had.
