Additional Description
Summary
Rita Sutherland [RS] age 51, was born January 27, 1955 in New Orleans, La. [NOL] She describes [NOL] as the greatest city in the world. [RS] is a Hurricane Katrina and Rita survivor. Her story begins with some details of her early life. She reflects on having a wonderful childhood and has fond memories of growing up in [NOL]. Recalling those experiences led her to remember another disaster Hurricane Betsy when she was a child, but says it was nothing like Katrina. No dead bodies floating in the water and no boats. In the midst of the storm, she describes her families path to Arkansas for shelter. Her path also led her to Lake Charles, La. [LCL] where she found shelter with relatives and thought she was safe. [RS] describes that another disaster ironically named after her [Hurricane Rita] would put her on the road again. Finally, her journey led her to Houston, Tx. She intends to stay, make a new home and begin a new life as a survivor of two of the worst disasters of 2005. RS has realized that she is at a turning point in her life. She is torn between two cities. One is destroyed and will remain in her memory and the other she will learn to love and call home. Today is the first day of the rest of her story.
