Additional Description

Summary

Chau Luu [CL], about 60 years old, is a Katrina evacuee. She left Vietnam with her family due to the harsh treatment when the Communists took over the country. CL’s escape from Vietnam was a long and difficult journey which led her to several countries such as Cambodia and Thailand before arriving to the U.S. CL arrived in Oregon around 1981. CL stated that she had a good first impression of the U.S. government because of the financial aid her family received. CL’s family relocated to N.O. because CL’s husband found a job working on a commercial fishing boat. CL stated that she enjoyed N.O. and its unique features such as the similarities to rural VN. CL evacuated at the last minute with the intention of returning in a few days. She stayed with her children but eventually moved out on her own with the help of governmental housing. Katrina had destroyed CL’s house and most of her possessions. Although CL missed N.O., she feared for her safety there. For now, CL plans to stay in Houston.
