Additional Description
Summary
Bong Mui [BM], a 59 year old male, is a Katrina evacuee. His family moved from North Vietnam to South Vietnam in 1954 when the country was divided. In South Vietnam, BM attended school until he graduated from medical school in 1971. In 1973, BM received a scholarship to study at Tulane University in New Orleans [N.O.]. Due to this, BM and his wife and child were apart from 1973 and were reunited in 1979 in Columbia, South America [S.A.] The family moved back to N.O. in 1979 when BM continued to attend school at Tulane University then transferred to Louisiana State University [LSU]. He started his own practice in Chalmette, LA, as well as Versailles, LA. Along with his own practice, he also worked as a clinical assistant professor at both Tulane and LSU. BM stated that being a N.O. resident, he and his family evacuated yearly. Acting as chief of medicine, BM had to stay in the hospital along with two other doctors and a nursing staff to tend to their patients. BM’s family had evacuated earlier. BM spent five gruesome days in the hospital, which had very little food, no electricity and no water. BM and his staff were overworked, and they were mentally and physically exhausted. The hospital was evacuated by the National Guards and BM and his staff was taken to La Fayette and eventually to Houston. After the experience, BM shared that he and his staff considered each other to be a family and they have been staying in contact regularly. Due to Katrina, BM had to restart his practice in Houston with great difficulty, but within a year BM was able to get his practice started. BM shared his current plan is to stay in Houston because most of his family and friends live here. He expressed his love for LA and called it his second home.
