Additional Description
Summary
Dianne Hampton [DH], age 55, is a Katrina survivor from the Lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans, Louisiana. She begins the interview with a few words on the friendliness of her old neighborhood. She talks about how she got her family together before the storm. She then describes her storm experience: waking up in the middle of the night and seeing the house surrounded by water, evacuating after a police officer warns them of the overflowing of the canal. She describes her Houston experiences: staying with a friend, the shelter, and the hotel. Dianne briefly describes her father’s Katrina experience. She explains how she did not want to evacuate for Rita when she heard it was coming to Houston. She describes how an employee of the hotel she was staying at helped her family. Dianne wants to return to New Orleans and worries about the people who will be homeless in the next twelve months.
