Additional Description

Summary

Quynh-Nhu Nguyen (QNN), age 17, is a Katrina evacuee who was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. She lived in a small, friendly neighborhood called Algiers and attended Edna Karr High School, where the majority of the students was African American. QNN’s experience is very unique since she is the only girl in her family along with nine brothers. QNN stated that the hurricane brought her family closer since they had to stick together. She is a devout Catholic, and she loves to be involved in the community and the church. QNN is a studious student, who likes to hang out with her friends at the mall or at the coffee shops during her leisure time. She then went on and described her evacuation experience and stated that the News influenced their evacuation decision. QNN was so concerned about Hurricane Katrina that she stayed home and packed while the rest of her family was at a party. After staying in Houston for a few days, QNN registered for school at Langham Creek High School. She praised the school as being welcoming and helpful, but also strict and more difficult compared to Edna Karr High School. She liked the fact that the school in Houston offered a variety of courses but she would sometime feel overwhelmed because there are so many more students. QNN thought that life in Houston was very different from NO because Houston is a much bigger city. She then ended the interview by stating how the life-changing hurricane has created a new person out of her and how it has taught her to appreciate everything in life.
