This series consists of 10 boxes of material related to Doug Michels' personal life for the year 1940-2003, with a bulk from the 1990s. Sub-series include correspondence with family, friends, and business associates; biographical information; as well as Christmas cards, postcards, and business cards. Family correspondence includes cards and letters between Doug Michels and Caroline Michels, his mother; Robert Michels, his father; Carolynn Michels Stevens, his sister; Ann Michels Clark, his sister; and Chris Clark, his nephew, as well as family photographs. In the mid-1960s Michels was married briefly to Caroll Michels, but no correspondence from this relationship survives in the archives. Personal correspondence includes letters with friends and associates. Highlights include correspondence over several decades with friends Philip (Pippa) Garner and Nancy Reese, noted California artists. There are files for personal correspondence with Michels' Ant Farm colleagues - Chip Lord, Curtis Schreier, Doug Hurr, and Hudson Marquez - but much of the Ant Farm-related correspondence is found in the series for professional projects (Boxes 11, 12, and 21–26). Another sub-series contains personal files, biographical information, Michels' theoretical writings, and unpublished research by scholars about Ant Farm. Of particular interest are diaries for 1983 and 1993, which contain Michels' detailed daily entries about his life. He may have created diaries for other years, but only these two have survived in his papers. Both were contained in a box of materials addressed to Lisa Findley, a close friend.
