Photographic and Audiovisual Media, undated, 1951-2005, bulk: 1970s and 1990s

 Series

Throughout his career Doug Michels recorded his life on film and videotape for the year 1951-2005, with a bulk from the 1970s and 1990s. In his archive he stored photographic prints and negatives with related correspondence or project files but kept 35mm slides together in cartons and binders. That arrangement has been retained here. The first sub-series consists of 8 boxes of binders holding 35mm slides. Binders 1-12 were organized and labeled by an archivist from loose slides stored in cartons. Binders 13 and 14 were organized in binders by Doug Michels. The slides record his early work with Ant Farm and the many design projects of his later career. Ant Farm documented their work in videotape and Michels continued this practice with his own work. The second sub-series is comprised of 20 boxes, which hold over 200 videotapes in Sony U-matic, U-matic S, and Betacam formats, and the more common VHS format. They are a record of the well-known Ant Farm projects such as "Media Burn" and "The Eternal Frame" as well as Michels' own design projects. Sub-series 3 includes two boxes of audiotapes - mostly cassette tapes containing music, language instruction, and other topics. Sub-series 4 includes audio-visual and computer media in various formats, including Super 8mm movie film, 16mm movie film, open-reel audio tape, open-reel video tape, SyQuest computer disk, Sony DVCAM, CD-ROM, Floppy disk, as well as Viewmaster viewer and slides.
