Exhibition Washington, Labels, 1986

 File — Box: 29, Folder: 18
From the Sub-Series:

Inspired by a 1978 NASA lecture about the behavior of fluids in weightlessness, Michels created Project BLUESTAR - a water-filled space station with a crew of human astronauts and dolphins. He developed the concept more fully from 1985-1986 while in residence at Harvard University on a Loeb Fellowship. At first he promoted this concept through lectures and museum exhibitions but later developed the technical details and a full narrative story about the space station and its inhabitants. He was unsuccessful in producing the story as a Hollywood movie, but in the mid-1990s led a team at Magnet Interactive Studios that developed Project BLUESTAR as an interactive computer game in CD-ROM format. This was a multimillion dollar project that featured state-of-the-art computer graphics and participation by Hollywood actors, but Magnet cancelled the project on the eve of release. Two boxes of records from 1985-1986 relate to Michels' research at Harvard and the resulting lectures and exhibition. Other materials from the exhibition include a scale model of the BLUESTAR space station and oversized display panels. Two boxes of records relate to production of the BLUESTAR computer game. BLUESTAR movie scripts, videotapes, and CD-ROMs are housed elsewhere. Materials are organized by projects. This subseries contains undated materials and those dating from 1921-2002, with a bulk from the 1980s-1990s.
