Early Work - Mies-Seagram's sketch, 1968

 File — Box: 11, Folder: 9
From the Sub-Series:

Doug Michels' professional career spanned the years 1967 to 2003 and encompassed projects in architecture, interior design, fashion design, furniture design, and movie production. This series (Boxes 11-51) contains correspondence, clippings, and other project-related files. Oversized materials for these projects include sketches, drawings, and prints and are kept separately in oversize boxes (Boxes 119-149) and oversize folders (OVS 1-94, Cabinet A, Drawers 1-15). Movie scripts and drafts are also stored separately (Boxes 52-56). Within this series most of the smaller projects are treated chronologically by decade: 1960s and 1970s (3 boxes), 1980s (2 boxes), 1990s (1 box), and Houston projects (1999-2003) (4 boxes). This first sub-series includes student work from the early 1960s, the Ant Farm period (1968-1978) other than Cadillac Ranch and Dolphin Embassy, and projects from 1978 to 1980, when he began his post-Ant Farm career in Houston and New York. The 1980s saw such Los Angeles projects as the offices of the Australian Tourist Commission (1983-1984) and the Neo 80 fashion boutique (1984). In Washington, D.C., Michels worked for the architecture firm HOK (1985-1986) and later designed the Alien swimsuit (1989). Alien was not Michels' only venture in fashion design; he also designed the costumes for the Project BLUESTAR movie and the related computer game. Materials from the 1990s include smaller projects, while Houston Projects (1999-2003) contains records from Michels' work at the University of Houston and design projects from the period. More complex projects generated considerable work product and each is treated in a separate sub-series described below.
