The collection arrived at the archives in relatively good order and in general the original order has been maintained. Materials in the collection include departmental records, extensive press clippings, and videos. The collection dates from 1948-1997 with most of the materials dating from 1977 to 1997. The collection is organized into eight series: Departmental Records, Building Dedications, In Memorium, In Appreciation and In Resolutions, In Resolution, Silver Anniversary Certificates, Press Clippings, and Audiovisual Materials. The collection did contain a sizable amount of photographic materials in all formats (slides, negatives, prints, contact sheets, etc.), that have been separated to form part of the UH Photographs Collection. The Office of University Relations also contained a large number of faculty vitas that were transferred to the Faculty Vita Records.

The Office of University Relations, as documented in these records, formed part of the Division of University Advancement alongside the Office of Development. The Office of University Relations supported the university through the offices of internal and external communications, publications, and marketing. The Office of External Communications generated communications pieces, such as news releases to the media and responses to media inquiries on behalf of the university. Its goal was to ensure accurate and timely information about the university and its colleges is communicated to the public via the news media, both local and beyond. The Office of Internal Communications disseminated major university news and events to faculty, staff, and students. The Office of University Marketing sought to enhance the University of Houston's efforts to bolster the image of the university.
As of February 2017, the Division of University Advancement focuses on Development and Alumni Relations, whereas many of the other responsibilities formerly identified with the Office of University Relations are now associated with the Division of University Marketing, Communication and Media Relations.
