Zingery Map Company Harris County Plat Maps Collection

 Collection
Identifier: 2016-039

This one-volume book of plat maps for Harris County, Texas by the Zingery Map Company provides a detailed view of land use in Houston and Harris County at the end of the 1960s. It is useful because it is indexed by street, subdivision, and survey and abstract number. The book was issued in late 1968 but contains maps revised through 1970. It covers the entire county in one volume because the maps were reproduced at relatively small scale. Its users were advised to contact the map company to purchase more detailed maps if desired. In contrast, the related Houston Subdivision Plat Maps Collection (accession no. 2007-027) contains more detailed maps at larger scale and encompasses six volumes.

The over-sized bound volume is labeled on the front as Zingery’s “Plat Book of Harris County,” with the name “C. C. Luckel” inscribed at lower right. A date stamp on the inside front cover shows the volume was received in the office of the Assistant Director of Industrial Development of the Missouri Pacific Railroad Company on December 31, 1968.

Biographical / Historical

A plat map is a public record containing maps of land, showing the division of the land into streets, blocks, lots, and the boundaries and dimensions of the lots. These plat maps are maintained by the county clerk’s office and are the official record of land use for both urban and rural areas of the county. Title companies, surveyors, and others who used the maps regularly in business often bought their own copies to keep in their offices. The Zingery Map Company and others reproduced and sold these plat maps in bound volumes.
