Biographical Note

Tommy Tune is a prolific theater actor, dancer, singer, director, producer, and choreographer. He was born in Wichita Falls, TX on February 28, 1939. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Drama from the University of Texas in 1962, and took graduate courses at the University of Houston. He moved to New York and made his Broadway debut in the musical Baker Street in 1965. He worked as a performer, director, and choreographer on several Broadway productions. Tune remains the only person to win Tony Awards in the same categories in consecutive years. He won for Best Choreography and Best Direction of a Musical in 1990 for Grand Hotel and 1991 for The Will Rogers Follies. He was also the first person to win Tony Awards in 4 categories. Over the course of his career, he has won 10 Tony Awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Award, 8 Drama Desk Awards, and the National Medal of Arts. The Tommy Tune Awards are hosted annually by Theatre Under the Stars in Houston, TX, and recognize achievement in high school musical theater
