Jay Hollenburger, Arthur Slaughter, and Gary Grether (JAG) Photographic Collection
This collection contains 10,079 Polaroid photographs and 192 slides documenting the personal and social lives of John Joseph "Jay" Hollenburger, Jr., Arthur "Art" Phillip Slaughter, and Gary Lee Grether, a Houston-based "throuple" in a relationship for more than 25 years, as well as their families, friends, and acquaintances. Within their social network, Jay, Art, and Gary were collectively known as "JAG," bringing together the initials of each of their first names. A logo displaying these letters is shown in many photographs in the collection.
Dating between 1964 and 1991, the photographs and slides depict a broad range of parties and gatherings primarily held at JAG's residences in Houston, including birthday and pool parties, Christmas and Halloween celebrations, dinner parties, game nights, and family visits. Also shown are their vacations, domestic and international, to places such as San Diego, San Francisco, Boston, Chicago, Denver, New York, Toronto, Vancouver, London, Acapulco, and Rio de Janeiro. The collection also shows LGBTQ+ events such as Houston's Follyball and "fly-ins," special biannual gatherings organized by Gamma Mu, a fraternity that JAG were involved with that catered to professional gay men.
This collection was featured in the catalog for the 65th Annual New York International Antiquarian Book Fair (NYIABF) in 2025. It gained further attention online via social media with articles published in the "The Advocate" and "Hyperallergic" in an article about the NYIABF.
