Lawrence Welsh Papers

 Collection
Identifier: 2026-005

The Lawrence Welsh papers document the creative and professional activities of poet, journalist, musician, and teacher Lawrence Welsh. The collection includes approximately 150 personal journals; records related to Welsh’s band, The Alcoholics, and the Los Angeles punk scene of the 1980s; and a significant body of flyers and ephemera pertaining to the El Paso and U.S.–Mexico borderlands art and poetry communities. Also present are typescript drafts of Welsh’s book-length works and chronological files containing correspondence, ephemera, and notes. The papers reflect Welsh’s literary production, musical involvement, and engagement with regional artistic communities, particularly in El Paso and the broader borderlands, as well as connections to the Los Angeles punk milieu. The collection was maintained and organized in part by Lawrence Welsh, who created a narrative inventory of the journals in collaboration with Granary Books. Original order has been preserved where identified, including within chronological files.
