Inspired by a 1978 NASA lecture about the behavior of fluids in weightlessness, Michels created Project BLUESTAR - a water-filled space station with a crew of human astronauts and dolphins. He developed the concept more fully from 1985-1986 while in residence at Harvard University on a Loeb Fellowship.
