Scope and Contents

This collection contains deeds, abstracts of title, legal files, real estate sales records, and many other materials related to businesses and properties held by various members of the Detering family from 1871-1989. The collection has been divided into five series: Properties, Legal Files, Trust and Estate Papers, Business Papers, and Financial Papers. Folders within each series (or subseries) are arranged chronologically.

Foley's Department Store Records

Scope and Contents Foley's Department Store Records comprise 42 record cartons, 16 oversized boxes, 32 bound ledgers and real estate records that are open to the public. In addition, there are 32 scrapbooks that are too fragile for public viewing. Records begin with the first stockholders' meeting held in 1911, preserved in a bound journal. This collection contains legal documents, advertisements, correspondence, and maps from various Texas counties dating from 1818 to 1907. Deeds and tax receipts make up a signififcant portion of the collection. Counties represented include Angelina, Cherokee, Tyler, Nacogdoches, Brazoria, Fort Bend, Galveston, and Harris.
