Scope and Contents

The M.L. Calk collection consists of eight letters that M.L. Calk wrote while he served with the 23rd Alabama Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Four of the letters are addressed to his mother, W.E. Calk, and four are addressed to his sister, Emma A. Calk. These handwritten letters, dating from December 9, 1861 through May 8, 1863, are accompanied by typed transcriptions. Several letters have additional writing in another hand.

Scope and Contents The William W. Edgerton collection is composed of personal correspondence between Civil War private William Wilberforce Edgerton of the 107th New York Volunteers and his immediate family. Most of the letters are between William W. Edgerton and his mother, Dorothy Doud Edgerton. Additional correspondents include his brother, John Howard Edgerton, and his sisters, Martha Newton and Augusta Tenney. The correspondence is arranged chronologically. The Lowther collection consists of 12 letters from Confederate soldier W. D. Lowther to his fiancee, Phronie or Fronie Autry, in Texas during the United States Civil War. Dated from June 1863 through May 1864, these handwritten letters are all accompanied by typed transcriptions, and a few folders contain handwritten transcripts as well.

Scope and Contents

The 35 items in the Winfield Scott Papers document aspects of the life, military service, and political career of General Scott from 1831 to 1866. The items include letters, general orders, legislative ordinance, maps, sheet music, envelopes, several printed engravings, and a printed mezzotint. A letter addressed to Elisa Wyse from Lieutenant John Wyse, with whom General Scott corresponds, also is included.
