Additional Description
Summary
Bridgette Chretien [BC], age 34, is a Katrina evacuee from New Orleans, LA [NOLA]. Her interview begins with her name and place of residence before hurricane Katrina. BC lived 5 or 6 houses away from the levee in an East New Orleans neighborhood. She paints a picture of changing dynamics in that neighborhood. BC discusses her family’s routine of getting together frequently at her home with family and friends. BC explains that typically, her immediate family, her in-law’s, and friends do not evacuate for hurricanes, however, with hurricane Katrina, they decide to evacuate. Therefore, her normal preparations for a hurricane are altered in her quest to assist others in evacuating. During the first week after the storm, BC is able to get multiple perspectives of what is happening in New Orleans from friends and relatives who are New Orleans policemen, firemen, and a deputy in Jefferson Parish. BC shares a traffic court experience in New Iberia, Louisiana during that first week after the storm. BC shares her experience of evacuating hurricane Rita from New Iberia, Louisiana to Dallas, Texas while her family elects to ride out the storm. BC paints a picture of the aftereffects of hurricane Rita on various family members’ homes. BC discusses the many issues that the family had to address since the storm such as schooling for their six year old son, employment, housing, insurance, FEMA, Red Cross, as well as the immediate family, extended family, and friends being scattered around the country. For now, her immediate family is united, residing in a purchased home in the Houston area, with plans for their son to attend a public school in the area.
