Additional Description

Summary

Juanita Roberson [JR], is a Katrina evacuee from New Orleans, LA [NOLA]. Most of this interview is delivered without interruption. JR lived in [NOLA] all of her life. JR lived in the Lower Ninth Ward before Katrina. She and her fiancé decided not to evacuate even though most of her family did. When a sister called her from safety outside NOLA, she discovered that her home was being flooded. She walked most of the way to the Morial Convention Center before she and her fiancé were given a ride. Juanita describes the trek to the Convention Center and the plight of the survivors there. She talks about the bus trip out of NOLA and her experiences in Waxahachie, Grand Prairie, and finally Houston, Texas. JR describes herself as someone who “doesn’t travel.” She says the whole ordeal has been traumatic and has “ruined her life.” She speaks often of her family members, especially her parents and hopes to one day return to New Orleans.
