Additional Description
Summary
Jaha Williams [JW], age 31, is a Katrina evacuee from New Orleans, LA. JW is originally from Seattle, Washington. JW attended Southern University in Baton Rouge. JW attended the University of New Orleans for her Master’s degree. JW felt like her neighbors in Behrman Heights in Algiers were her second family and she misses that community life. JW was very involved with Franklin Avenue Baptist church in New Orleans and misses that community. She talks about the church regrouping in Houston, Texas. JW gives a very moving recap of her evacuation to Gonzales, LA and her subsequent moves to Austin, TX, Dallas, TX, and finally Houston, TX where she is employed as director of fund development for Montgomery County United Way. “I just hope that the culture doesn’t die. New Orleans had it’s problems but every city does – and, you’re talking about, I think the second oldest city in the country – I’d hate to see that history gone and I hope that we will be able to take what has happened with Katrina, learn from it, and move on from it, but don’t forget it,” sums up what JW will miss about New Orleans as well as her thoughts on the future of New Orleans.
